Exchange does not trade on a Saturday, Monday's financial news is a reprint of the share prices of the previous Friday. It makes two changes to how these are reported however:

i the 'high'and 'low'columns are replaced with a column stating the months in which the dividends are paid. There will usually be two months indicated, usually six months apart.

ii the 'plus or minus column is replaced by one marked 'xd'. This is followed by a date, and refers to when a new buyer could last buy a share without entitlement to the last dividend.

Interpretation

You are likely only to be interested in the price of the share, and may choose to ignore the other statistical information.

However, price statistics by themselves only tell part of the story. They tell you that a share has gone up or down, and give you numerical indications of how the market sees that share, but these statistics do not tell you why any of these things have happened.

To obtain this information, it is necessary to read the report published each day (except Monday) just before the share prices. This report, written by the Financial Times'own reporters, gives a clear indication of which of the many movements in prices and indices are significant, and what reasons lie behind those moves. Regular reading of this report is probably the quickest way to understanding how the markets respond.

Additional statistical information is given in various 'boxes'. The most useful to the small investor will be the various indices calculated by the financial news site and explained below.

Indices

Despite references to the 'Financial Times index', the financial news site actually publishes many indices. The most widely used are:

i Financial Times 30-share index,

ii Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 index,

iii Financial Times Actuaries indices.

Other indices are calculated for other markets.

The New York Stock Exchange's equivalent is the Dow Jones index, and Tokyo's equivalent is the Nikkei Dow market index. Both of these are reported in The Fin
