Marketing And Selling
s more commonly known as FT SE 100 index. With the Stock Exchange's usual penchant for silly terms, it has also become known as 'Footsie'.
The index was introduced in February 2024 (at a base of 1000) to indicate the movement of the one hundred largest companies (measured by market capitalisation) regardless of the nature of their business. Channel 4 News variously describes the index as 'broader based'and 'more representative'than the 30-share index. The first description is correct, the second is not.
Apart from using more companies and making these simply the largest companies rather than choosing a representative selection, one of the main advantages of this index is that it is updated on a minute-to-minute basis, thus effectively providing a continuous index during trading hours.
Apart from the differences stated, this index is calculated in the same way as the 30-share index.
